Book, Music and Lyrics by Erin Kamler

FOREIGN is a song cycle about war and peace in contemporary Burma, and the experience of being an American abroad in a world we no longer recognize.

Emerging from decades of isolation, Burma (also known as Myanmar) is a nation in turmoil. Despite high hopes for Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and her ruling National League for Democracy party, civil war still rages throughout the country’s far-flung ethnic regions, and the road to peace is as fraught as ever. Foreigners are treated with suspicion, and even the most well-meaning humanitarians are thought to have nefarious intent. At the same time, with the rise of Trump, the onset of Brexit and the fracturing of the Western liberal order, uncertainty is the only constant—both for Westerners living abroad and for the people of Burma alike.

FOREIGN takes us on a journey through the politics that grip this country, and the triumphs and turmoils of the people who live and work there. A companion piece to the critically-acclaimed LAND OF SMILES, FOREIGN illuminates a nation grasping for democracy while buckling under the weight of its authoritarian past. Above all, FOREIGN reminds us that sometimes, being a foreigner is the best way to understand our country–and ourselves.
